Packed Walkergate celebrates Lunar New Year

The year of the dragon got underway on Saturday as a busy Walkergate welcomed the festivities to Millenium place.

Lunar New Year is celebrated around the world on the first new moon between January 21 and February 20, with months of the lunar year based on the phases of the moon. There were events across the city to mark the occasion, including the always spectacular lion dance taking place at Walkergate.

The lion delighted the crowds as it brought them good luck and prosperity as part of the tradition said to date back as far as the year 618.

We would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who joined us to make this year’s Lunar New Year celebrations such a big success and filled Walkergate and Durham with colour, noise and personality.

A special thanks to those who took part in the parade including children from local schools. Happy Lunar New Year to you all and the very best of luck for the year ahead from everyone at Walkergate Durham!
