Walkergate was honoured to mark our Remembrance Sunday in Durham with a visit from the world’s only hand-built, full-size reproduction Spitfire MK IX fighter aircraft – a striking symbol of the bravery and sacrifice of those who have served in conflicts past and present.
This faithful recreation gave visitors to Durham city centre the opportunity to see up close the iconic aircraft which played a critical role in defeating Luftwaffe air attacks during the Battle of Britain in 1940. The replica Spitfire display featured as part of the Remembrance Day parade’s route through Durham, beginning at the Market Place and making its way through the streets.
Across County Durham, further acts of remembrance marked the momentous day, from the illumination of Eleven-O-One, locally known as Seaham’s Tommy Statue, to Remembrance Day Spotlight Tours at the region’s archival collection The Story.
Back at Walkergate, veterans past and present enjoyed a free drink with compliments of Katie O’Brien’s Irish Tavern to thank them for their service.
Walkergate would like to thank Durham County Council and Simply Spitfire for their roles in the event’s organisation.
